The Bread We Share

The smell of fresh bread has a way of bringing people together.

But long before bread reaches a table, there is a field. There is a harvest. There are faithful hands willing to steward what God has provided.

That vision is at the heart of Ruth’s Grain Exchange, an emerging ministry of Herndon Covenant Church in northwest Kansas. Spearheaded by Pastor Jack Kyle and Rev. Cathy Bouts, the ministry seeks to connect Christian wheat farmers, churches, and communities through what they describe as a modern gleaning movement.

The inspiration comes from the story of Ruth and Boaz. Ruth gleaned in the fields to survive. Boaz simply sought to steward his resources faithfully. Neither could have imagined how God would use their ordinary acts of faithfulness in the larger story of redemption.

“Isn’t it interesting,” Bouts and Kyle reflect, “that neither one of them knew or thought that their stewardship was actually weaving the DNA of the Savior of the world?”

That question shapes the ministry’s vision today.

Ruth’s Grain Exchange partners with local farmers to gather grain and then equips churches and individuals with grain, mills, training, and resources. The goal is both practical and relational: ensuring that no harvest goes unused while creating new opportunities for connection, learning, and service.

The ministry operates through a hub-and-spoke model. Herndon Covenant serves as the hub, gathering grain and coordinating distribution. Partner churches become local connection points, helping place grain and flour into the hands of individuals, families, and communities who can use it.

For Bouts and Kyle, the vision extends beyond grain itself. It is about stewardship – of our resources, our relationships, our communities, and even our physical well-being. A Bread of Life workshop they held June 13 explored not only the craft of milling and baking, but also how caring for our bodies and minds can become an expression of faithful discipleship.

As the Midwest Conference pursues its vision of becoming Communities of Jesus – transformed, connected, and multiplying – Ruth’s Grain Exchange offers a compelling example of what that can look like in practice. Rural farmers and urban congregations discover they need one another. Churches become bridges between harvest and neighborhood. Relationships form across geography and circumstance. What begins in a wheat field becomes an opportunity to share God’s provision in tangible ways.

Kyle describes the effort as helping close the distance between a harvested field and a hungry neighbor.

Now, Ruth’s Grain Exchange is inviting other churches to join the story. Congregations interested in becoming local partners, sponsoring a grain delivery, or exploring how grain distribution might strengthen outreach in their communities are encouraged to contact Rev. Cathy Bouts at cbouts101@gmail.com

What begins as grain harvested from a field may end as bread shared around a table. Along the way, relationships are formed, communities are strengthened, and God’s Kingdom becomes visible through the bread we share.

Our Postcards from the Midwest Conference are short and encouraging looks at what God is doing in churches across the Midwest Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church – Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, western Missouri, Nebraska and Wyoming. We’re celebrating faithfulness, fresh vision, and the beauty of ministry in all shapes and sizes.
