A new era of theater has arrived in KC with Balladeer Theatre Company, launching out of The Culture House.
Since its inception, The Culture House has acknowledged the significance and power of the story and contemporary voices. Balladeer seems to be the next natural addition to the programs and opportunities in The Culture House family for professional artists to create.
“Our professional community of artists have produced some of the most beloved performances for the city including Störling Dance Theater’s ‘UNDERGROUND,’” said Jeremiah Enna, Executive Director of The Culture House. “We have a passion for creating excellent, well done art which is also why we have a division to encourage new work. At the core of who we are is the belief that each person was created in the image of God and has been gifted with creative gifts to improve our community and world.”
Balladeer, a professional theatre company, is dedicated to creating a collaborative and inclusive environment for both artists and audiences alike. The idea is that when playwrights, actors and directors, as well as audience members, share ideas, these ideas can reach their fullest potential.
The goal is developing excellent new artistic voices and producing new works regularly.
Balladeers, led by Will Gurley, are encouraged to explore stories that matter — stories that impact audiences and inspire our imaginations for good.
Throughout Gurley’s years in theater, he noticed one this missing: “Good stories with good messages. Art influences culture, and a lot of the art that I had been seeing was telling the audience messages that lead to destruction, division, and confusion. In the summer of 2023, I came to Jeremiah Enna and the Culture House with an idea: A brand new professional theatre company that tells stories that matter, good stories with good messages. That idea evolved into the Balladeer Theatre Company.”
Balladeer’s first show is Friday, Oct. 13 @ 7 p.m. at The Culture House Stage & Studio. “FIRST DRAFT: A Night of New Plays” features five short new plays, all with a combined duration of approximately one hour. A complimentary reception will follow the performance.
