Unite KC will host Kansas City’s fourth annual Walk for Unity on Saturday, June 8, 2024. This year’s theme, “Journey Together,” emphasizes the belief that addressing racism and pursuing unity takes time and does not happen in isolation. The free event includes an approximately one-mile walk that takes place along a portion of Troost Avenue – an historic racial dividing line in Kansas City – and opportunities for building community and friendship.
Date: Saturday, June 8
Time: 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Where: The walk begins on the football field at Troost Ave. and E. Truman Rd. and ends at the Great Lawn (located at The Paseo and E. 17th Terrace).
Activities: After completing the walking route, participants will arrive at the Great Lawn for games, food and live music.
Prior to the walk, attendees will participate in an activity designed to facilitate interactions with others and to help transition into substantive conversations along the walk route.
Upon arriving at what Unite KC refers to as the Celebration Lawn, participants are encouraged to stay and enjoy activities for all ages as they form new or build existing relationships.
“We view the Walk for Unity as a starting point for something more. It’s not just an event; it’s an opportunity for relationship building,” said Ray Jarrett, Unite KC Executive Director.
“By hosting this community event that has become a summer highlight for many and offering some practical tools on how to stay connected with one another, we hope participants will be motivated to be more intentional about journeying together toward greater understanding.”
The Walk for Unity is a free community event. However, registration is required. Participants should register at unitekc.org/events/calendar.
