‘THE WIZ’ Coming to KCK

3 mins read

Kansas City Kansas Public Schools and Kansas Academy of Theatrical Arts have teamed up to #raisethecurtains this summer in Kansas City, KS!

July 28-30, the Broadway hit, “THE WIZ” will come to life on the Washington High School stage! KATA is excited to partner with KCKPS to bring this high-spirited, rockin’ version of “The Wizard Of Oz” to a community that is hungry for more theatrical performances inside their multicultural Wyandotte County lines.

KATA is celebrating over 30 seasons of summer theater!

“We’re proud of our 30+ year legacy in KCK’s diverse community,” said KATA’s Founding Director Judi “Mama” Jones. “We remain the only independent, comprehensive performing arts youth program in Wyandotte and Leavenworth Counties.”

The goals of the Summer Theater Program are:

  • To offer access to the Arts to the whole community.
  • To generate in young people a sense of positive self-image.
  • To create an appreciation of multicultural Arts.
  • To help the current generation become a creative asset to their community.
  • To launch youth into the world of work.
  • To engage children, young adults and adults who have always wanted to be in a stage production.

Judi is passionate about encouraging those around her, taking a note from 1 Thessalonians 5:11.

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

1 Thessalonians 5:11

Inspired by the “Wizard of Oz,” “THE WIZ” is a wonderful show for Judi and her crew to take on considering all the spiritual lessons we can learn from Dorothy’s search for home, the Cowardly Lion’s struggle with fear, the Tin Man’s lack of a heart (seeking something to be passionate about) and Scarecrow’s wishing he had a brain (ever compare your insight and understanding to someone else’s).

“THE WIZ” is a timeless, musical sensation and multi-cultural view of Oz with a soulful twist. It tells a touching story of friendship, family and the universal power of home, while featuring a slew of now-classic pop songs like “No Bad News,” “Brand New Day,” “Home” and “Ease On Down the Road.” Join this iconic team as they ease their way down the road to the powerful Wizard of Oz.
