As we usher in the New Year, mark your calendars for a transformative experience that blends history, emotion and a powerful call to unity.

Störling Dance Theater’s “Underground” returns to the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts Feb. 1 and 2. This year’s performances feature the special musical guest Israel Houghton of Israel & New Breed.

“Underground” features the world-class artists of Störling, under the direction of Mona Störling-Enna, as well as guest artists from Europe and the United States.

This annual Black History Month tradition skillfully narrates the history and heroics of the Underground Railroad, guiding audiences through a spectrum of emotions — from sorrow and shame to joy and hope.

Beyond a production, “Underground” has evolved into a movement, fostering essential dialogue for racial healing and unity. The narrative sparks a drive in audience participants to extend invitations to friends, encouraging them to “go underground” and experience the profound impact of the show.

In a meaningful collaboration, Störling Dance Theater has partnered with Unite KC, challenging audiences to emulate the courage of historical heroes in the fight against racial division.

Ray Jarrett, Executive Director of Unite KC, notes, “I’ve seen ‘Underground’ every year. And every year, I’m inspired to ‘do something.’ Unite KC provides an outlet for individuals with a similar response to channel their energy into positive action for racial unity in Kansas City.”

Both Jarrett and Jeremiah Enna, Executive Director and Producer of the show, believe in the collective responsibility to contribute to the ongoing story of racial unity in the United States.

Enna emphasizes, “Sixteen years later, we’re still telling these compelling stories of our history and reminding ourselves of the role we can play today in bringing unity to our world, just like the abolitionists.”

Tickets for all “Underground” shows are now available at Kauffman Center’s website.
